I love old movies, especially those steamy, romantic flicks of the 1940s-1950s when two strangers meet in an exotic place and suddenly fall head-over-heels in love. While I'm sure some couples' initial encounter can honestly be called love at first sight, that's not my story. I met my husband Marty when we were college freshmen taking the same Spanish class. Since we were both modern language majors, we shared many classes throughout our four years of study. But except for an occasional smile of recognition at chance meetings around the campus, nothing really clicked. Jump ahead a few years. I was employed at a government office in NYC. I was sitting at my desk when a group of new employees were given a tour of the facilities. I looked up and saw a familiar face. I couldn't quite place it but remembered the warm smile and attractive physique. And when I got the chance to talk to this man of mystery with whom I was sure I shared some history I asked him if he had attended Lincoln High School. He said he hadn't but soon things came together in our minds and we reminisced about some quirky professors and the good old days at college. There were over a dozen single twenty-somethings working at our office and we soon became a tight group. We went out for drinks after work, tried new restaurants and spent some summer evenings cheering on the Mets at Shea Stadium. Coincidentally, Marty lived just a few blocks away from me in Brooklyn and we rode the subway home together from work and social events. After about six months of group outings, we started dating. A year later, we got engaged and then married. We've been together ever since, recently celebrating 35 years of wedded bliss. I still enjoy watching those old, boy-meets-girl classic movies.. I still have my doubts about love at first sight. But there is really something special about love at second sight. Not only did that ring true for Marty and me, I can't even begin to recount the dozens of similar stories I've heard from friends and family over the years. So if you're still looking for Mr. or Ms. Right, go back for the future. Look up your first crush on Facebook; make arrangements to attend your summer camp or high school reunion. If someone from your past is currently single, you, too, can fall in love at second sight.
