In December of 2008, I spent the winter holidays with my fiancé in Ireland. She was with my family and me in December the previous year, so it was only fair that I make the trip this time. Prior to traveling to Ireland, I bought an engagement ring from a jewelry Web site along with a Christmas card with a fiancé theme. I had other gifts as well, but it was these two that I had intended on proposing to her with. As it got closer to Christmas Day, I was looking for the right opportunity to present itself to propose. I played various scenarios in my mind about what places would be appropriate and how I should phrase the wording. It all seemed good in my mind, but the moments that came up just weren’t right. As Christmas Eve came and went, I realized that Christmas morning would be as good a time as any to propose. There was a big family gathering at her house on Christmas Day. Everyone had exchanged gifts and I had presented my fiancé with hers—except the ring and card. After gifts were exchanged, she went upstairs to check something and I knew this was the moment I was waiting for. I gathered the card and ring from my room and moved toward her room to catch her before she went downstairs. She seemed surprised as I handed her the card and she began to read it. As she finished reading the card, I took out the ring and proposed. She said yes, and we shared our first moment as an engaged couple. We had talked about it at times before, but nothing matched the reality of formally committing my love for her. After the proposal, we went downstairs and shared the news with her family, who were also happy for us. She loved the card and she loved the ring. It wasn’t the most extravagant ring in the world, but that didn’t matter to her. There doesn’t always have to be a heavy price tag when showing love for someone, but rather the feelings and emotions that rest inside the gift are what are most important. Proposing to her felt right then, and it still does now.
